1) Never click on pop-ups that you do not
recognize, Not even if it says that your
computer is infected and it is going to
scan/clean/repair you computer or you are the lucky
winner of a million dollars. 2) Always
have virus/spam protection installed and
working. Make sure you have programs
for both, or one program that handles both
types of attacks (See Links). And run weekly
scans of your computer with both your spam
protection and you virus protection.
3) Keep virus definitions up to date.
This should be done on a weekly basis, any
correctly installed virus protection should
do this automatically. But to be sure,
you can always open up your virus software
and check.
4) Be sure to have the latest windows
updates/patches installed via the windows
update tool. Again this is an
automatic procedure if it is enabled.
To be sure, right click on the my computer
icon, either on your desktop or in your
start menu. Then properties, and finally the
automatic updates tab.
5) Finally follow the following removal
techniques once a month to rid anything else
that might have gotten by the previous tips. |

Step 1: Install spam removal software.
Step 2: Run
Scans on all Hard Disks
Step 3: Repeat
step 2 using your virus protection.
Step 4: Restart
computer. This will allow the antispam
software to fully complete
Step 5: Run
spam removal software again. Often the
removal software will not get everything the
first time through.
Step 6:
-
Click Start
then Control Panel.
-
Go to
Add/Remove Programs.
-
Remove any
software that you do not recognize,
especially ones with small file size.
Less than 2 megabytes. Be very careful
not to uninstall software that you or
your computer relies on. If you are
unsure if it is or isn't, simply Google
the name of the program with the word
spam next to it. There are many
sites out there more than willing to let
you know if a certain program is spam.
You aren't the only one that dislikes
it.
Step 7:(Exercise
extreme caution) If problems still
persist, most notably during startup,
proceed as follows.
-
Click
Start, then Run.
-
type
msconfig
-
A box will
appear containing many tabs, click on
the tab labeled startup. DO NOT TOUCH
ANY OTHER TABS!
-
Once here,
you will see a list of all of the
programs that run during startup.
Carefully go through each line one by
one to see if a given task is something
you recognize or installed. The best way
to go about this is to look at the
command line, go ahead and click the
line between the words "command" and
"Location" to expand the line so you can
see the entire directory.
-
From here
you should be able to identify whether
or not you need it.
-
Uncheck all
that you do not. This will reduce
your spam/pop ups and speed up your
computer significantly.
-
After doing
this and you find that something that
was suppose to run during startup, or a
particular program that you normally use
isn't functioning right. This
means you probably unchecked something
that you needed. Not a big deal.
Go ahead and repeat the previous steps
and re-check some of the startup items
that you were unsure about until your
programs function again as normal.
